Primary (1960)

Title: Primary (1960)
Director: Robert Drew, sort of. It's kinda' direction-by-committee.
Genre: Documentary
Language: English; no subtitles.
Duration: 58 minutes.
Plot Outline: Follows the campaigns of Minnesota senator Hubert Humphrey and upstart Massachusetts senator John Kennedy as they vie for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1960. The contrasts between the two are stark: Humphrey is an old-school politician attempting to appeal to Wisconsin voters’ agricultural roots at the expense of the "eastern elite", portraying himself as a champion of the common man. Kennedy, on the other hand, can be perceived as a celebrity adored by urban voters and youth, a rock star before that term was used in politics. The real stars of the film, though, are the voters of Wisconsin, whose views are surprisingly diverse. And even though we know how it ends, Drew’s filmmaking prowess makes it a nail-biting finish.

Early direct cinema effort, mostly interesting as a piece of recorded history. Another film I had trouble finding for a while.

Dadetown (1995)

Title: Dadetown (1995)
Director: Russ Hexter
Genre: Documentary
Language: English; no subtitles.
Duration: 93 minutes.
Plot Outline: In this documentary, a small town finds itself enjoying a boom and suffering an economic downturn at the same time. Dadetown, New York is a small town whose central industry is the Gorman Metal Works, a metal fabricating plant; during World War II, Gorman made a bundle from defense contracts, but today they crank out staples and paper clips. Dadetown's citizens are a stolid, conservative lot who don't much care for change, and they're more than a bit suspicious when a high-tech computer firm, API Technologies, moves into town, attracted by Dadetown's favorable tax rates and small-town charm. API is doing well in the marketplace, and the company's employees start building expensive new homes. Their presence also prompts a number of new businesses, including upscale boutiques and cappuccino shops, which the longtime residents view with extreme suspicion.

Sort of difficult to find, which, for better or worse, probably contributes significantly to its reputation. Maybe this post will help alleviate some of that difficulty.
