A Well Spent Life (1972)

Title: A Well Spent Life (1972)
Director/Writer: Les Blank
Cast: Mance Lipscomb, Alfred Franklin, Hattie Franklin, Elnora Lipscomb, etc.
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 44 minutes
Languages: English; no subtitles.
Description: In the tradition of his past and future up-close celebrity documentaries, Les Blank served up 1972's A Well-Spent Life. The subject is Texas blues artist Mance Lipscomb, seen at work and in repose. A lifelong sharecropper and tenant farmer, Lipscomb was 65 when he made his first record. His versatility as a singer, composer, guitarist and violinist bordered on the uncanny, and his influence would continue to be felt even into the highly streamlined country-blues market of the 1990s. Director Blank makes excellent use of the materials at hand (there is comparatively little of Lipscomb on film), and the result is a rich, fully fleshed out life study of one of the Southwest's finest "songsters."

Spend It All (1972)

Title: Spend It All (1972)
Director/Writer: Les Blank
Cast: Various.
Genre: Documentary
Duration: 41 minutes
Languages: English; no subtitles.
Description: Spend It All is a 45-minute study of cajuns and cajun music, shot in Louisiana. It features the usual Blank/Gerson approach: close-up sequences in which people rap to the camera, musical sections (beautifully recorded by Skip), and lyrical, flowing studies of the land that makes the music what it is. A few months ago, Blank went back to show the film to the cajuns who were in it, and got busted for dope. It was a ten to life bust, but when he showed the film to the sheriff ("I kept thinking of Leadbelly the whole time," said Blank) he got off with a small fine and ten days. Now that's a review that means something.

C'était un rendez-vous (1976) aka Rendezvous

Title: C'était un rendez-vous (1976) aka Rendezvous
Director/Writer: Claude Lelouch
Cast: Some pigeons, a few pedestrians, etc.
Genre: Action/Short
Duration: 9 minutes
Languages: None.
Description: The film shows an eight-minute drive through Paris in the early hours of the morning (05:30hrs), accompanied by sounds of a high-revving engine, gear changes and squealing tires. It starts in a tunnel of the Paris Périphérique at Porte Dauphine, with an onboard view from an unseen car exiting up on a ramp to Avenue Foch. Well known landmarks such as the Arc de Triomphe, Opéra Garnier, and Place de la Concorde with its obelisk are passed, as well as the Champs-Élysées. Pedestrians are passed, pigeons sitting on the streets are scattered, red lights are ignored, one-way streets are driven up the wrong way, centre lines are crossed, the car runs on a pavement to avoid a refuse lorry. The car is never seen as the camera seems to be attached below the front bumper, judging from the relative positions of other cars, the visible headlight beam and the final shot when the car is parked in front of kerbstones on Montmartre, with the famous Cathedral Sacré Cœur behind, and out of shot.
